The WHOIS service shows a domain name’s public information

The WHOIS service lets you look up the public information for any domain name or IP address – including domain names that do not end in .fi.

How to make a query

In the search field, enter the domain name or IP address whose information you want to see. Always include the domain ending as well, for example .fi, .com, .se or .net. You will then see the public information for that domain name.

What information does the service show?
        
The WHOIS service shows the user information that is defined as public in law, such as a corporate user’s name and the date on which the domain name was registered. The result also tells you whether the domain name is available or taken.
        
Where does the information come from?
        
When you make a query, it is directed to the domain name’s public WHOIS database, which returns the domain name’s public information. Each organisation that administers a domain ending maintains its own database.
        
Why do results for different endings look different?
        
Whois-palvelu perustuu kansainväliseen internet-standardiin RFC 3912, jota Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) koordinoi ja jota ylimmän tason verkkotunnusten ylläpitäjät noudattavat.
       The standard sets out which information is presented in the results, but each registry operator formats its results using its own terms. As a result, the information for different domain endings differs – for example, a domain name’s status is presented in different ways depending on which ending you are searching.
